Hi, I’m Jai, founder and instructor of Angel Guard Self-Defence, classes designed by women, for women, trans, and non-binary folk.
After years in the security industry and military, and a lifetime of navigating male-dominated spaces, I knew how to fight. But when I experienced domestic violence, was attacked in the street, and stalked, I realized that knowing how to fight wasn’t the same as knowing how to defend myself in real-life, in unpredictable situations.
I began looking for self-defence classes that felt safe, practical, and welcoming, but what I found were classes designed by men, taught by men, full of overly complex techniques and aggressive mindsets. Even classes labelled “for women” often missed the mark.
That’s when I discovered Strike Back, Self Defence For Women, a women-led self-defence organisation that trained female instructors using skills and processes designed for women, by women. After one inspiring phone call with their CEO, I knew this was what I wanted to do, empower my community with real-life skills and a safe space to grow.
Why I Do This
I’ve spent over 25 years in the security industry, served in the military, worked over a decade in the NHS, and trained in counselling. More importantly, I bring lived experience and deep empathy to everything I teach. I understand what it feels like to be on edge walking home, to carry trauma, and to crave safety without knowing where to find it.
My classes are built to be:
- Inclusive – Welcoming women, trans, and non-binary folk of all backgrounds.
- Practical – Focused on real-life scenarios, not flashy fight techniques.
- Supportive – A space where you can learn, share, and grow without judgment.
- Empowering – Helping you build confidence, community, and strength.
What You’ll Get
- Real-life self-defence skills and processes that are simple and effective.
- A safe, nurturing environment to learn and connect.
- Opportunities to build confidence and resilience.
- A community of people who just get it.
